Du‛ā’ al‑Iftitāḥ

The Supplication of the Opening – whispered in the blessed nights of Ramadan, asking for the protection and reappearance of Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his return).

What is Du‛ā’ al‑Iftitāḥ?

Du‛ā’ al‑Iftitāḥ is a profound supplication taught by our 12th Imam, Imam Mahdi (may Allah hasten his noble reappearance). It is traditionally recited during the holy month of Ramadan, especially on the first night or any night of this blessed month. The word “Iftitah” means “opening” – it opens the heart toward divine mercy, gratitude, and hope for justice.

Connection with Ramadan

Ramadan is the month of the Qur’an, patience, and spiritual renewal. The recitation of Du‛ā’ al‑Iftitah during this month carries special weight: it aligns the believer’s soul with the themes of divine sovereignty, forgiveness, and the ultimate victory of good over evil. The supplication explicitly asks Allah to hasten the appearance of the Living Imam – Imam Mahdi – who will fill the earth with justice and light.

“O Allah, we complain to You of the absence of our Prophet, and the concealment of our Guardian, and the abundance of our enemies, and the smallness of our numbers, and the severity of trials…”

Praying for Imam Mahdi’s Protection

One of the core intentions of this dua is to affirm loyalty to the Imam of the Age and to beseech Allah to protect him, ease his emergence, and grant us the honour of serving him. In every phrase, the supplicant expresses yearning for a world where truth prevails – a world that Imam Mahdi will establish.

As we listen to or recite Du‛ā’ al‑Iftitah, we strengthen our spiritual bond with the Living Imam, renew our pledge of obedience, and actively pray for his safety. This is a duty and a mercy for all believers.

Reflection

This supplication is not a mere ritual; it is a dialogue between the helpless servant and the All‑Powerful Lord. It reminds us that even in times of occultation, the Imam is aware of our state, and our prayers reach him. May Allah accept our supplication and hasten the glad tidings of his reappearance.
